The days are getting shorter, the cold and rain are on their way, the leaves are falling from the trees and (as we know) the clocks will go back. But if autumn is known for anything, it is for being a season full of foods that fill us with energy and boost our immunity.

An autumn classic: chestnuts and walnuts

When we think of autumn it is impossible not to think of roast chestnuts. From October to December chestnuts are readily available, with stalls selling freshly roasted chestnuts seemingly on every corner. However, chestnuts are not only eaten roasted, there are many other recipes like chestnut soup, chestnut cake and various sauces for meat.

Chestnuts are also not the only autumn nut; walnuts are important at this time of year too. The perfect ingredient to provide crunch in any dessert, they can also complement a cheese board or give a gourmet touch to salads.

Pumpkin and sweet potato, orange foods

Their colour is not the only thing that these foods have in common, they are both sweet and so perfect for savoury dishes and desserts alike. And best of all, they are really easy to cook.

The sweet potato is a root vegetable that, as well as delicious, is rich in fibre, antioxidants and minerals. An easy recipe you can’t go wrong with is sweet potato chips. Just cut the potato into thin slices, fry it or put it in the oven and it’s ready to eat. Combined with your favourite Velarte and a good dipping sauce, it makes a varied and delicious snack to surprise anyone.

Pumpkin is much more than a fun decoration for Halloween. A very versatile food that can used in soups or fillings for pasta, desserts and even in jams. But the undoubted dish par excellence is roasted pumpkin. Just slice, season to taste, add a drizzle of oil and bake. An easy and delicious recipe that never fails.

A mix of sweet and citrus fruits

With autumn comes the season of mandarins, oranges and grapefruit, essential for tackling the colds typical of the season month thanks to their high vitamin C content. They are the perfect ingredient to complete a good tasting breakfast. A few sticks of Velarte sunflower seed bread and freshly squeezed juice gives you the energy you need to face the day.

Another typically autumnal fruit is grapes. Green or purple, with or without seeds, all varieties provide hydration, vitamins and antioxidants. Together with nuts and some Mediterranium Bites, they go perfectly with a cheese board.

And, of course, we can’t forget apples. Although we are used to eating them all year round, they are at their best in September and October. Apples have many benefits, but perhaps the greatest is their versatility. Roasted with chicken, as the star ingredient in a Tarte Tatin or simply fresh from the tree, they can be enjoyed however you like.

So autumn is a great time to get into the kitchen and enjoy a good meal made with the best ingredients. Just enjoy it with your favourite Velarte to get a great taste.

On 22 September, we will say goodbye to summer and welcome to autumn.
